We are in need of a few communal supplies. I would highly appreciate it if you could donate pencils and dry erase markers to this class. Thank you, parents, for the donations we have already received.

I am so proud of the students of 208! I posed two questions to the class on Monday. "How is soil impacted positively and negatively?" and "Why is soil important?". The small group and whole group conversations led to many ideas and answers. Students were using knowledge about soil and the world to engage in discussions that challenged them and that applied to the world. We began conversations about climate change, farming practices, rainwater collection, globalism, the way that soil interacts with animals and people, and the way everything interacts with it. Students were inspired and began thinking about the problems they want to see solved.
While we have to continue our learning on soil, rocks, weathering and landforms so that they learn everything a 4th grade student should, we are now using their questions and passions to start research projects. They will be given individualized topics based on individual questions and concerns. We will begin these on Monday, but some students got books from the library to begin their learning already. We are kicking off our new unit, "How the World Works", by learning all about soil. This began with an investigation outdoors, exploring the soil in 4 locations around the school. Students created the investigation sheet because it featured their own questions. Students also helped in creating the rubric and held themselves to high standards. Many students dressed in costumes on October 31st. At the end of the day, there was a parade and then a fun time with many parents. Thank you to all parents who brought snacks and who chose to spend time with the class. We ate healthy snacks, saw an awesome science presentation with dry ice, and played a fun mummy game. |
