We are collaborating with a 7th Grade math class. This activity focuses on the relationships of area and perimeter. This began before our multiplication unit began.

We continued observing the properties of soil through an observation in which students shook soil with water and then allowed the soil to settle into layers. The rocks sunk to the bottom, and humus floated to the top. Students were able to observe the composition of each of the soils. Our class got connected with Ms. Tolpa's 7th grade life science class. Each student had access to a personal microscope and 7th grade tutor. They taught the 208 students how to use a microscope and how to set up their own slides. We took our four soil collections and conducted thorough observations/investigations to compare the soils, discuss their properties, and assess their use. We began the "How the World Works" unit, where we study soil, rocks, and land forms. We went outside to collect soil from different locations for future investigations We earned a Paw Party! Through brainstorming and voting, the class decided to celebrate by having a pajama party with "stuffies" and all. Everything is better in jammies. We are starting a new unit on place value and understanding base ten. If you want to practice at home, we will be exploring writing numbers in different forms, rounding, and operations like addition and subtraction. We started with a game that develops conceptual understanding of the renaming and regrouping qualities of the base ten system. |
