IB Unit of Study:
This year you will be working of units of study, where you will be connecting all content areas into units of inquiry. During these units you will be exploring, experimenting, researching, questioning, and connecting. You will be spending longer periods of time digging deeply into one central idea and connect our work into all areas of study. At the end of each unit you will have an opportunity to decide on a final activity to share with your class.
We are very excited to begin our transdisciplinary theme How We Express Ourselves. In this unit we will focus on our central idea of how creative expressions provide ways to communicate ideas and emotions. We will inquire about how creativity can communicate ideas, about the value of creation, and how ideas form and grow. Get ready to learn about the Haudenosaunee Indians and Poetry.
Reading and Language Arts: This year we will spend a big part of our day working together to improve our reading skills. Using a variety of engaging and challenging text, we will explore many different genres, or types of stories. We will also put more emphasis on nonfiction reading and responding in writing across the curriculum. This will help us improve our reading comprehension, reading strategy skills, fluency, as well as increase our vocabulary. We are also going to read a lot of books this year!
Writing: In fourth grade you will do tons of writing! You will have many opportunities to write for fun, where you will create your own stories and original writing. You will become expert brainstormers, revisers, editors and publishers. You also have time to respond to all the great reading you are doing by writing!
Math: This year, math is going to be hands-on! We will be keeping a composition notebook to reflect on our math. You will be spending a lot of your time working through problems in collaboration with your classmates. You will be asked not to just solve the problems, but explain your thinking. We are using Mathmatics International and Sansa math to focus on solving real-world problems with math. You can expect to become awesome mathematicians!
Social Emotional Learning: We will work on the importance of having a growth mindset, with an understanding that our brains can grow. We will focus on positive goal setting activities that will help us when we feel challenged. We will begin our Second Step program that is helping us understand what empathy is and how we can work at being better to one another.
