We have continued to learn about geometry in math groups, but whole groups learning has recently had a new topic: fractions. We are exploring fraction equivalence and are comparing fractions through a variety of strategies, including the creation of equivalent fractions. We will soon move on to adding and subtracting fractions that are more than a whole. Here are some picture of students interacting with fraction equivalence through a game called "Fair Trades".

Last week, we took a field trip to the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts in Skokie and watched a modern dance performance. This project is due on Monday 2-26-18.
They will create a PSA (public service announcement), which is meant to convince High School students that voting is important and that they should take advantage of their right to vote when they are old enough. Using knowledge of the voting rights timeline and the women’s suffrage movement, students will give 2 reasons why High School students should use their right to vote. They may present using a poster, powtoon, powerpoint, speech, song, or artwork, comic, skit, or video. Ask your child about what they are doing. In math, we finished our factors and multiples unit and are moving into fraction equivalency. In math groups, we are focusing on shapes, angles, lines, coordinates, area, and perimeter. Groups have been going very well and students are challenged. This unit based on leadership, challenging stereotypes, and change-bringers is coming to an end. Students will begin a final project for this unit where they create a PSA encouraging high school students to vote when they come of age. In this unit, we heavily explored voting rights in the United States, especially the women's suffragist movement. Our next unit is "How We Organize Ourselves" and focuses on government. Our lines of inquiry are "why governments are formed?", "what is the role of government in society?", and "what are the rights of people according to their governments". We will be taking a guided tour to city council on March 21st to see the government in action. We will be using "The Hope Chest" as a read aloud book to connect the two units. - Students have been split into small groups for math so that every student is challenged and supported at their level. Instead of an hour and a half math block, we will have an hour long whole group math block and 40 minutes for math small groups. Students will go to two 20 minute long sessions in which they will do ST Math, Moby Max, independent or group practice, a problem solving task, or meet with me.
Reading Groups are wrapping up and students have been placed in different groups and will be reading new books. Your child will be reading one of the following books: - Number the Stars - The Music of Dolphins - Because if Winn-Dixie - Just Juice - Ivy and Bean |
