This week we are focusing on details as we work on our narrative pieces and on poetry. We will be taking time to observe our surroundings by going outside and focusing on detailed descriptions. We will continue learning number sense and creating a concrete foundation before starting multi-digit multiplication. We are getting ready for "Genius Hour", where students will dive deep into their interests and start the research process. I added a photo of the groups. I will be seeing a group per day and each group every 2 weeks.

We read several articles and legends about the creation of the Hadenosaunee confederacy, which greatly influenced United States governance. Students researched and presented on one of the many documents we analyzed and videos we watched. We focused on comparing numbers, and understanding place value patterns in a concrete way. Thursday was the International Day of Peace. To take part in it, we read a few books about peace and discussed the ways that we can bring peace to ourselves, our family, school, community, city, and country. Each student created a Peace Pinwheel where he or she decided on four practical ways to commit to show peace. Thank you to parents and families who signed the peace pledge with children. These pledges are now on the wall by the classroom door. We are getting excited about writing narratives. Students chose a specific special memory that they will be using to convey in a personal narrative. We have begun writing conferences/writer's workshop as students work on the first draft.
Student "I am in the 4th Grade" Poems that we stared the very 1st day of school are finally up after days of peer editing. This is the final copy of the first poem that students wrote. Please email me if you are eager to see you child's poem before it goes home in 6 weeks. 9 days in and we have already done so much! We have learned about the Hadenosaunee, sometimes called the Iroquois, and the different ways that they expressed themselves. We did a Gallary Walk to explore symbolism and researched to answer our own questions. We have begun annotating texts and reading closely. We also began talking bout symbolism and the expression of self through color. In the theme of expressing ourselves, in math we are writing numbers in different forms and saying numbers correctly to the trillions as well. We came up with an essential agreement as a class, which determines the expectations for 208. Students brainstormed ideas about what they need to be successful. About 50 were displayed on the board and students worked in groups to determine the 5 most important to them. After presentations, students engaged in a discussion facilitated by the teacher where they made suggestions for edits and then the class agreed or gave other suggestions. This is our final agreement, determined by students and signed by everyone. 208 has been given the awesome opportunity to work with 7th grade students in a math mentor program! Mr. Rossiter from room 309 will be joining us every other week for math tasks, projects, and enrichment. We met for the fist time on Monday 9/11/17 to meet one another and worked on a place value math activity that builds conceptual understanding of the difference between a digit, and its value. |
