Halloween is this upcoming Tuesday. Students are allowed to wear costumes that are appropriate for school and that do not involve a mask or fake weapons. There will be a Halloween parade at 1:40 on the track followed by a 'party'. If you are able to bring healthy snacks for students or if you would like to help lead a craft or activity, please contact me through email or text.

This week was another week filled with poetry and literacy through written works. Students are creating and organizing poems that will be turned into poetry bound books. In class, we are promoting correct spelling, so I ask that you help students identify words that they need to correct in homework assignments, if possible. We are wrapping up this unit and moving toward our new IB unit. "How The World Works" is going to be the new focus. We will use rocks and soils to guide our inquiry. In math, we are still working through 2 or 3 digit by 1 digit multiplication using the standard algorithm or the area model, which teaches the distributive property.
Pajama Day was a great day filled with reading and comfort! We have written so many types of poems so far. On Monday, 208 had it's first substitute and worked on multiplication fluency as well as writing limericks, cinquaines, and couplets. We have analyzed and studied several great poems such as "The Pasture" and "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening" by Robert Frost, and "Tiger" by William Blake, and many more. Students are enjoying the freedom of expression found in Poetry Writing.
We are also using the book "Love That Dog" to document how characters can be dynamic and change opinions over time. The central character is learning about poetry and starting to believe in his ability to be a writer. Attendance:
Our attendance has been excellent thanks to the dedication of parents and students. There is a school-wide competition that delivers a trophy to the class in each grade level with the best attendance percentage for the week. We have won 2 of the 3 weeks so far! Students are excited to host the trophy. Behavior: Students in 208 are earning many PAWS for their hallway transitions, for working hard, and being helpful. We got a "Paw Party" after earning our first 10 on the 8th day of school. Since I don't give 208 any Paws, I am excited to see other teachers and staff congratulate the class and individuals. I'm proud of them too. We have now reached our new goal and received 28 total Paws in 28 days! To celebrate, we are coming to school in Pajamas on Wednesday, October 18th. They may bring pajamas, comfy clothes, snuggies, slippers, and stuffed animals. We will still work hard, but in style. *Students have been struggling with chattiness in Specials Classes, and we are working on it each day. If you want, encourage your child to do as well in specials as they do in class. Grades: I am very proud of students so far! They are working hard and I would like for us to keep encouraging them to keep the momentum going! Partnerships/Field Trips: We are partnering with "Barrel of Monkeys" for this unit. They will be coming in on Thursdays staring 10/19 to work on writing. In the end of the program, they will perform a creation from student work. We are going to see an Opera on Thursday, November 9th in the morning. More information will follow as I receive it. If you are willing to chaperone, please email me at [email protected]. I need 2 parent volunteers. Although we are are still in the "How We Express Ourselves" unit, we are moving on to a bigger focus on poetry. We are using the novel "Love That Dog" to guide our learning and are using many poetry styles and poets to inspire our own poetry. Students organized and created binders for this topic and have begun to do Poetry Studies. |
