I am so proud of the students of 208! I posed two questions to the class on Monday. "How is soil impacted positively and negatively?" and "Why is soil important?". The small group and whole group conversations led to many ideas and answers. Students were using knowledge about soil and the world to engage in discussions that challenged them and that applied to the world. We began conversations about climate change, farming practices, rainwater collection, globalism, the way that soil interacts with animals and people, and the way everything interacts with it. Students were inspired and began thinking about the problems they want to see solved.
While we have to continue our learning on soil, rocks, weathering and landforms so that they learn everything a 4th grade student should, we are now using their questions and passions to start research projects. They will be given individualized topics based on individual questions and concerns. We will begin these on Monday, but some students got books from the library to begin their learning already.
