After place value, the newest unit is on Numbers and Operations. We began with addition and subtraction to any place value and have started to move on to multi-digit multiplication. Many students still need to work on basic multiplication facts, and practice at home is much needed. Thank you in advance for working with your children on learning multiplication. You may have already seen the multiplication grids being sent home. It is meant to slowly strengthen fact skills without students memorizing the order (like in skip counting), but truly knowing the facts. To clarify, students are meant to time themselves for 5 minutes and complete as many as possible. Afterward, they must complete the chart in pen or another color. They may use any resource to do so, such as parent help, a calculator, or a multiplication chart. Students who struggle with multiplication facts will use multiplication charts for a short time to be able to learn the multi-digit multiplication algorithm. We are tracking our progress in a math journal and are multiplying 3-Digit by 1 Digit numbers.
