We are currently reading "The Hope Chest" as a class. This book takes place during the final moments on the road to women's suffrage. We see the legislative fight up close from the point of view of Violet, and 11 year old girl who is seeing her older sister Chloe fight for women's rights. This historical fiction book is a nice bridge between our previous and current unit. Students have created summaries, and they have used a map to track the suffragist and anti states as the book unveils them. Students are also using the map to track the central character's travels and the main events at each location. Additionally as students read they are marking observations on character traits ad organizing them. Students mark the traits they see as being physical, social, emotional, or philosophical. The also provide the chapter where they made that connection. The following pictures show some examples of that work.

Our new unit is about "How We Organize Ourselves" so we have been learning about the U.S Government. These posters are ways that students decided to organize their learning on the 3 branches of government. Thank you so much for your support in these projects. Student presentations were great and truly showed their understanding of the topic. It was a great bridge between the current and prior unit. It is exciting to see students share their knowledge with confidence and pride. The African American Showcase was wonderful! Thank you to those of you who were able to come to watch it. The 4th grade came together and created a stop motion video of the poem "The Tiger Who Wore White Gloves (What You Are, You Are)" by Gwendolyn Brooks after studying about her life as part of the "Who We Are" unit. I have uploaded the video and you can watch it by clicking the button below, or share it with others by sending the following link.
